One way to check the health of your mattress is to go to a department store and lie down on a brand new mattress. See how it feels, then go home and try your own. When buying a new mattress, there are several factors to consider:

1. Size. Make sure that your bed is large enough to provide ample sleeping space for you. That said, there is a wide range of prices for satisfactory products, starting at the lower end—about $300—and going all the way up to $1,200 and more. The best advice: Spend as much as you can, and your body will thank you for it.

Pillows

Believe it or not, your head accounts for a full 20 percent of your body weight and, therefore, needs to be well supported when you’re lying down. Down or feather pillows are usually best because they “give” better than polyester fills, which can be stiff and inflexible.

Your pillow should support the head and neck, keeping them in alignment with the spine, no matter what sleeping position you take. Generally speaking, you’ll want a firmer pillow if you sleep on your side, a medium-firm pillow if you sleep on your back, and a soft pillow if you sleep on your stomach.

Back sleepers, side sleepers, stomach sleepers, everyone has his or her favorite sleep style. How you sleep best is the position you want to be in as long as you also feel comfortable during the day. If you sleep on your stomach and wake with lower back pain, you may want to try adjusting to a side position (some people find that stacking pillows in front of and behind them will help them maintain this position). If you sleep on your back and your partner tells you that you snore, a side position may also help solve this problem.
